Summertime is a wonderful time for those who love the heat. A time of family, vacation and enjoying Gods creation. It is also a time when school children are given summer reading assignments to be completed by the start of the new school year. Tantasqua Regional High School has made the book "Nickel and Dime" a featured book of their summer reading program. Their goal was to have 13 to 17 year old children read this book. In the book you will find the f-bomb numerous times. You will find gratuitous sex called "beautiful" as well as people recreationally using drugs. None of those behaviors will be called to account or consequence in ways that would leave those reading the book believing rightly about such activity. I have no problem with the author of the book. She wrote a book for adults that ended up on the New York Times bestseller list. I certainly disagree with her socialist left leanings and would have no problem discussing my problems with her, but she did not write the book, as far as I know for school children.

The problem lies with the person or persons who decided that this was a book that should be read by high school children as a part of their summer reading program. You have to wonder how they could come to this conclusion given the content of the book. Fortunately there have been a few responsible parents who have gotten involved and brought into question not only the book, but the process of how these things are decided upon. Another great reminder of the need for people to be involved!
