There are striking results being reported from a study by the State Education Agency, "a quasi-governmental office created by the U.S Department of Education to distribute federal funds for literacy services, was ordered by Mayor Anthony A. Williams in 2003 as part of his four-year, $4 million adult literacy initiative". The study finds that about one third of the people living in the nations capital are functionally illiterate. "Adults are considered functionally illiterate if they have trouble doing such things as comprehending bus schedules, reading maps and filling out job applications." This is an amazing statistic and just as amazing and troubling is, the national rate of illiteracy, which is one fifth of the population. So what happens to a society that does not read any longer? It is the beginning of the end. There will an incredible division of the classes and the literate will rule over the illiterate. There might not be a worse sign for country.

The answer to this problem lies with parents, you, mom and dad, making sure your children become readers. While we cannot change a nations problem, we can be sure to equip our children to be able to function and thrive regardless of conditions. Reading is the key that opens up that door. It is worth the energy it will take to train your children to read, regardless of their age.

This problem does not even begin to take into consideration the spiritual damage that happens when people do not read. That is an excuse and rationalization people will use time and time again for not feasting on the Word of God, to the detriment of their souls. There is a lot at stake and much to be gained here and eternally by raising up a generation of readers. You might not get the generation, but you can get your children to develop into solid, mature literate readers, to the Glory of God!
